Location
This photo was taken on Nusa Lembongan (Indonesia) at Devil's Tear after a week long wedding celebration for good friends of ours in Bali. The shear power and noise that these waves created was something you can never forget.Time
A great example of what can be achieved with an entry level DSLR with the right timing and conditions. This shot was taken at sunset in a week where "perfect" sunsets were a rarity. The clouds created great atmosphere, and the size and power of the waves were spectacular (not to mention the noise); I would have to take the shot and quickly hide the camera under my shirt to protect it from the spray!Lighting
Sunset has always been a favourite time of day to shoot for me, so I ensured we arrived early to Sandy Bay Beach Club Restaurant early in order to get on site in time. As the clouds were rolling in and light was fading fast, I had to scope the area and take shots on the fly.Equipment
I was not travelling with my preferred kit (D800e) due to the type of travel I was doing, thus I was using my old Nikon D5000 with a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 VR II.Inspiration
Coming from Australia, the beach and ocean have always been a favourite subject for me to shoot. On this particular day the wind was up and the waves were huge; this in combination with sunset was a no brainer for me. This was easily one of the highlights of the trip, so I was glad to be able to capture it.Editing
Due to the fast changing light conditions, Lightroom was needed to really bring out the details in the clouds and rocks in regards to post-processing. Other than that, the photo is "untouched".In my camera bag
Nikon D800e, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED , Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G, Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight, Tripod only for long exposure sessions.Feedback
Do your research. Google the location, weather conditions (rain, sunset/sunrise times, tide change times, wind speed, local rules), and get on location early. Pack the right clothing - you don't want to leave location early because you were too cold or got caught out by rain. Have patience as well; the last thing you want is to spend the effort getting there and not having the patience to stick around to get the shot! Be safe. The amount of times I've seen overly keen photographers risk their safety to "get the shot" is mind blowing - no shot is worth your health! Lastly, enjoy the moment. Too often I have found myself having a holiday through the viewfinder. Take your shots, but don't forget to put the camera away and enjoy the moment.
