Thank you so much. You must go to Skomer - its is an amazing place. I have been twice now and stayed on the island for 4 nights. You are so close to the puffins you can stroke them. One was tugging at a frayed part of my jeans hoping for nesting material.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Skomer Island, Pembrokeshire, South Wales.

Time

This pic was taken on 7th May 2013 at 3.30pm

Lighting

The sun was reflecting off the sea, and the background of the pic is the sea in the distance.....you can see the light bokeh. The dark parts are the cliffs to the left of the puffin.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D700 with the Nikon 70mm-300mm VR lens. ISO 400, f8

Inspiration

This was my first visit To Skomer. I stayed for 4 days on the island......and unbeatable way to experience the island and it's inhabitants. I love this shot of the puffin 'stretching' his wings against the lovely background. One of the 'must' shots to try and get. Of course the main draw was to see the puffins, but the Island has so much to offer. A memorable time was witnessing the call of the Manx Shearwater returning to their nests under complete darkness at midnight.....eerie

Editing

Hardly any post-processing. Just added some luminance and increased the exposure a tad.

In my camera bag

I have recently bought the Nikon 80-400mm VR lens, and I took this to Skomer in June 2014.......for more puffins! I also have a Fuji XE1, but don't use it that much for wildlife.

Feedback

It would be a must to stay overnight on Skomer Island. The day tourists arrive at 10am and leave at 4pm. The best time for photographing the puffins is a dusk when they are returning from the sea to nest overnight. It is also the best time for the light, especially with the 'golden hour'. Learning their flight patterns is also important, and how the puffins hover for a second in the air before landing.....the best time to get your flight shot.
