Location
I have a cabin on a lake in Northern Quebec that I consider my Cathedral. The water was still and calm and I had my hand painted custom canoe tied off on shore.Time
I waited for the sun to drop low in the shy but not long enough for long shadows. So nearing sunset just before entering the "golden hour!"Lighting
Lighting on water is a most difficult thing that I have taken countless photos trying to perfect. The water acts as a mirrior and if you have waves it becomes even harder to gage colour and light. I had taken shots on this day over 3 hours to see where the best sunlight took over.Equipment
I shoot on Nikon gear and lenses. This was taken on a D700 with the trusty "streetsweeper" lens the 24 - 120. For this type of shooting I put a folding chair on the dock and use a Manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I wanted to capture an image that represented Canada in one simple image. The lakes and rivers opened this country unlike any other country in the world! And the canoe for hundreds of years was the only way ot travel. So put them together and wait for the light. I was happy with the result!Editing
Lightroom is my go to softwear. I use photoshop only to panoramirize! In my camera bag
It took me a while to sort out what I wanted to carry around. I have a large backpack from Lowepro that has my travel gear. This has everything but the kitchen sink. I use it for landscape and travel trips. I have a shoulder Lowepro for short trips. Fully kitted I carry a boom mike and 40 foot cable, lenses I carry are the, 14 -24, 24 - 120, 70 - 200, 100 prime and 50mil. Bodies are the D610 and D700 for backup. Gradient filter kit and cleaners. when I go for short trips I just carry the small bag with 14 -24, 24 - 120, 70 - 200 and cleaning kits.Feedback
Pay close attention to composition! In a scene like this you can afford to experiment on angle and light and lenses! It's really not going anywhere and the scene is begging you to find it please! Don't forget that light on water is the trickster spirit and you need to respect it! F/4 at 1/13 of a second. ISO 200.
