Location
This is picture of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C., one of many memorable sights in the area.Time
The picture was taken at 5:42 PM.Lighting
The many monuments and buildings in D.C. are well-lit, making the photographer's job easier. The Memorial's lighting, reflected on the water, made a great contrast with the dark evening sky.Equipment
This was taken with my first DSLR, a Nikon D70 and a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 lens, set to 165mm. The camera was tripod-mounted, set at ISO 800, and 1/13 second. No flash.Inspiration
I loved the reflection of the warm light on the water. The dark evening sky made a great background, and simplified the composition.Editing
Post processing was color correction, a slight crop, and sharpening. In my camera bag
My current kit is a Sony A7R III mirrorless camera, three Sony lenses (24-105 f/4, 70-300 f/4, and 50mm f1.8), and a Nissin flash. I add a flash bracket, coiled sync cord, and a flash diffuser when I shoot events.Feedback
1. Arriving early to set up a locations you are keenly interested in helps, so you can grab a good vantage point before any crowds may appear (less a problem then, compared to today!). 2. Take time to study the environment, to find the camera angle you like best. 3. Watch the environment for the unexpected - perhaps you might want to wait until a person appears, to give the composition a sense of scale.
