Location
A crisp spring morning at the University of Washington; wonderful light. The "Quad" was awash with people (many taking pictures). Time to look up to isolate the subject!Time
Morning, as I recall, say around 9:30.Lighting
So many have spoken of, more eloquently than I, the importance looking for the (quality of) light first, then looking for the subject. "Light reveals, shadows define."Equipment
Nikon D800 (my second DSLR), 24-70 zoom, tripod, SB-700 flash off-camera with a Rogue Flashbender to soften the light (I commonly use the Flashbender when I use a speedlight).Inspiration
The subject! Beautiful cherry tree, with the graceful arcs evoking a heart. Great light and subject coming together.Editing
Cropping (of course), selective lightening of the shadows. In my camera bag
Camera bogey with the 24-70 attached (my workhorse lens), 70-200 zoom, 50 mm prime, Rogue Flashbender+diffusion panel, flash bracket (for event photography), sync cord, SB-700 with color filters, gloves, protein bar.Feedback
Scout for the light first. Find a subject that you like. Walk around the subject to find the "right" composition and lightning. Shoot both portrait & landscape orientations. Enjoy!
