Behind The Lens

Location

The image was captured at the Royal Regatta in Dartmouth. The Typhoon fly-by was the highlight of the day, which also featured the Red Arrows and a Hercules fly-by.

Time

The image was taken early afternoon

Lighting

Even though the image was taken early afternoon, it was quite overcast so the lighting conditions weren't brilliant. The shot was slight under exposed in my camera compensation with the shadows lifted slightly in Lightroom CC. I wouldn't normally do this but I needed the extra speed and knew that I'd be able to crop later if I shot at 100 ISO.

Equipment

My camera was a Canon 5D MkIII with a Canon 100-400mm USM L lens

Inspiration

Even though I'm not normally interested in photographic planes, trains and automobiles, I couldn't resist practising my skills with a moving target

Editing

A slight increase in the orange saturation and a dark vignette were the only changes in post processing in order to maintain the original feel.Due to only having a 400mm lens with me, the image is quite highly cropped.

In my camera bag

I only ever take one bag when I venture out, and that forces me to choose what equipment I take with me. For street photography it's normally my little Canon G1X but I'll shorty be replacing that with a Fuji XPro2 which I've been highly impressed with. For all my other shoots I tend to pick appropriate equipment from the following. 5D MkIII, 5D Mk II (backup for weddings), Canon 600EX flash with a Gary Fong light modifyer, Canon 430EX, Manfrotto 190 trip[od with various ball heads, Manfrotto BeFree travel tripod. Lenses include 100-400mm IS L USM, 85mm IS USM L, 16-35mm IS USM L, 24-105mm IS L USM. Far too many bags and other accessories to mention. My best advice would be - Don't buy cheap as you'll only ending up replacing it. Second hand kit is normally very good quality from a reputable camera shop.

Feedback

Settings used were 100 ISO, f5.6 at 1/500th of a second to try and capture the motion without any blur. Always try and push yourself to step outside of your comfort zone even if you don't get great images as it will improve and your success rate will go up.
