Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Onaping Falls, Ontario, Canada.

Time

It was shot in late afternoon.

Lighting

I wanted the sun to bring out the fall colours of the leaves; the declining sun also provided shadows on the water which also helped highlight the reflections.

Equipment

I used a Canon 60D with the 135 mm lens set at roughly 25 mm. The camera was set on a tripod.

Inspiration

I had owned that camera only a few weeks and was eager for any opportunity to become more familiar with it. We made a family picnic at Onaping Falls, my girlfriend (now fiancee) and I brought our cameras and enjoyed walking the trails around the falls while taking photographs.

Editing

Yes. Again I was relatively new at post-processing, so I played a great deal with the available options. I do remember adding some saturation and vibrancy to enhance the colour.

In my camera bag

At that time I owned three lenses : the standard 135 mm lens that came with the 60D, which I still use regularly when taking landscapes; a Canon 55 mm lens which came with my previous camera; and a Kenko 420-800 mm lenses which I seldom use. Since then I added a Quantaray 70-300 mm lens with tele-macro, a Canon 100 mm macro lens and a Canon 50 mm macro lens with the life-size converter.

Feedback

Northern Ontario is sparsely populated, has a hilly terrain filled with countless lakes and rivers and provides great photo opportunities. It is heavily forested and the leaves normally start changing in mid-September providing a colorful display into early October.
