This photo was taken 7 years back during a short stint as a photographer for a travel magazine. This was my first assignment and it was a sweet moment for me to go to Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte. Locals call this place "Hidden Paradise" since it was supposed to be hidden from tourists.Time
I can remember taking this shot during midday and I was perspiring intensely as we took a short hike going across a few hills and ended in a short peak overlooking a great coastal scene. I didn't expect this fantastic scene. At that time, I just started landscape photography knew only too little about gears, filters and even bracketing exposures. But i have another change I will surely visit this place again.Lighting
Since the sun was high during this time and my time to take photos was limited, I opted out of the fly to get this scene in black and white. In doing so I wanted to include the bright sun at the right against a contrasty array of rocks in the foreground thus leading the view towards the sea and some grungy clouds and set that mood in a somewhat dramatic look.Equipment
Other than my Nikon D7000 and a Sigma 10-20mm lens, I had no other gear with me. So I went to get this shot handheld.Inspiration
I always wanted to make a great black and white photo of landscapes, something that would be dramatic, moody and has an intense play of tones. Little did I know I would love doing black and white photos all my life. There is something in tones that makes me want to do a great scene be simplified in monochrome... and that is to inspire.Editing
When I did this image, I was just starting to learn post processing, I wasn't much keen on details that is why my clouds were high on steroids and going almost full clarity. The sun was up so I did manage to correct the exposure in Adobe Lightroom as well as decrease the highlights and increase the shadows. I think I adjusted the contrast slider to have a good mix of shadows in the foreground and background with a great deal of highlights on the right just blending the sun in with a soft brush. In my camera bag
When i started landscape photography, I only had my Nikon body and a Sigma ultrawide lens. Nowadays i always bring in a set of filters ND and a soft gradient filter in the bag, oh not to forget a polarizer and my trusty tripod. I never leave for a shoot without it.Feedback
Always envision what you want others to see, in a way that you make them see what you saw. In this regard, your photos leave an emotional impact and and a feel that makes it difficult to forget. Creativity for me, is not just showing good composition or great technical aspects in a photo but more of your photo leaving something for the viewer to remember.
