Location
We were on a beach near Newgale. It was the end of our trip through Wales.Time
It was the end of the afternoon. Not the sunset yet but the colors were starting to get this gold-ish tint.Lighting
This is only the natural light. I practically never use flashs so sunset and the moments before and after it is my favorite moments to shoot outside.Equipment
At that time I was shooting a Canon 6D with a 28mm f/1.8 prime lens from Canon as well, and that's it. It was actually going to be just a simple snapshot of our exhausted dog scratching his ear so I wasn't going to give it a lot of work.Inspiration
So yeah, basically our dog, Pim's, had chased a kite and he was exhausted. He came back to us and we put him his leash. I was shooting some landscape just before so I was packing my filters and tripod and I saw him so exhausted that it was funny. I wanted to get a picture of him but more in a "snapshot" way. I got to his level and aimed for the shot, then when I released the shutter he scratched himself on the floor. At 1/250s it kinda freezed the motion which gives this photo something worth to show in the end.Editing
The post-processing was quite light. I shoot in RAW so I always have to apply at least some settings like lens correction etc. Otherwise, I opened the shadows a bit and closed the highlights. I added a little bit of vignetting to draw the attention on the subject and close the picture and that's pretty much it.In my camera bag
At that time I was shooting a 6D with 3 prime lenses (28/1.8, 50/1.4, and 85/1.8) but a couple months ago, I switched to micro 4/3 with the Olympus EM1. With it I shoot the 12-40 2.8, the 40-150 2.8 and I have added a Voigtlander 17.5/0.95 for really low light situations and for videos. I also have a filter set from Formatt Hitech, and my 3LT Brian tripod. On top of that, I carry my Macbook Air, a couple of hard drives, duct tape and a Leatherman.Feedback
Well, in this particular case, luck is an important ingredient. But for luck to help you, I think you have to create the good conditions too. If I was going to try and reproduce this shot, I would definitely try to shoot it wide open (I was shooting at f4) and set a faster shutter speed. You could help with a flash and a softbox but with a good ISO and a wide aperture, if you shoot at the right time of the day with the right light, you won't need it.
