Location
This was taken at Allan Bank, Grasmere in the English Lake District. Allan Bank was once the home of William Wordsworth and his family. You can just see Grasmere lake through the windowTime
It was taken in the middle of the afternoon in May this year. The weather was rather mixed, generally a lot of cloud about but every now and then the sun burst through to let shafts of light into the room.Lighting
As it was a cloudy day the lighting was lovely and soft but the room that this was taken was quite dark, so there was a strong contrast between the light through the window and the rest of the room.Equipment
A Nikon D600, Nikon 16-35mm f4.0 lens. Taken at 1/50s, f4.0 at ISO200Inspiration
Some years earlier there had been a fire at Allan Bank and the National Trust who now own the property left some of the room almost untouched. The walls were unpainted and floors had no carpets and there was evidence of burn marks in the woodwork. This gave the whole place bags of atmosphere and I could just imagine one of Wordsworth's family, perhaps a daughter doing her knitting while sat in the window enjoying the view.Editing
The photos was taken in Raw and then processed in LightRoom. I reduced the highlights to get more detail of the view through the window and converted to B&WIn my camera bag
Most of my working days I am photographing property for clients so I always carry my Nikon D810, and my go to lens is a Nikon 16-35mm f4.0. I also carry a Nikon 50mm f1.4 prime in case I want to do some close-ups, and I have a second hand Nikon 35-70mm f2.8 mid range zoom. The 35-70 is a bit heavy and old but I got it cheap and its still works really well with the D810, a great combination of old and new kit.Feedback
When using a wide angle lens its very easy to fall into the trap of shooting everything in landscape format and forget to turn the camera and try different angles. As you can see this was shot in portrait, so my tip would be play around and take pictures in a few different formats until you get a composition that really works.
