Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our home in Georgia. We have a pool and these two, my husband & grandson, love to spend time playing there. They have such a sweet bond, I can't help but capture it every chance I get!

Time

This image was taken in full sun! Our pool is always a favorite place to play and sometimes you just have to go with the flow or miss the shot. I can't wait around for sunset to get the perfectly lit shot with a toddler! There are so many precious moments to capture, you really have to be able to embrace all different kinds of lighting situations.

Lighting

Because it was mid day, I situated myself so that no shadows were cast on their faces. If I would have spent time trying to move my subjects in perfect light, the moment and the connection would have been gone.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 6D, 35mm 1.4, f2.8. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

These two, my husband & grandson, have such an amazing bond with one another. Every time they are together, scenes like this happen. Their relationship in of itself is so inspiring. So quite honestly, real life..that's inspiring to me. That's what fulfills my artist's heart. I'm so happy to be the memory keeper in my family. That's what we are as photographers. We capture moments and the photographs are tangible proof that it happened and we were a part of it. I think that's so incredibly special.

Editing

I love black and white photographs. I think they bring out such emotion & connection in an image, telling a beautiful story. I knew right away that's what I would do with this image. I made some simple adjustments first to the shadows, dropping them down a bit. I also took the highlights down just a tad too. I ran a grainy black and white action on it in PS, but reduced the grain all the way down & also boosted the depth just a bit. I love a matte finish, so that's how I finished off. Deep Matte and some sharpening, that's it! Post processing doesn't always have to be complicated to achieve something beautiful!

In my camera bag

The first thing always packed is my Canon 6D. It's my work horse and I love it! The majority of the time, my 35mm 1.4 is on the body. This prime lens is my favorite. It is so versatile and I love this focal length. A lot of my work consists of soft, dreamy imagery so I also have a Lensbaby Velvet 56. This lens produces some gorgeous softness and bokeh. It's a manual lens, so there's challenge in it also! I have a Helios 44-2, which is an old Russian SLR manual lens that gives images with texture an amazing, swirl like bokeh and can create the most gorgeous sunflare. Last but not least, I always have my 50mm with me. It's the first lens I shot with and it just has a permanent place in my camera bag!

Feedback

Connection in an image is so important in order for the viewer to feel what you did at that moment. I'm not afraid to get up close. I feel like I would have lost the intimacy of this moment if I was standing back shooting at a longer focal length. You also have to be open to shooting whatever the lighting condition is at the time. While I'd love for every image to be shot at sunrise or sunset, that's just not realistic. Embrace that full sun!! Learn to shoot in all situations so you don't have to pass up a beautiful moment because you don't know how to make the light you have at the time, work for you.
