Location
This is a scenic lookout along the road of North Conway/Bartlett in New Hampshire, few winters backTime
It was early afternoon -- we were in transition from the ski slopes to some place warmLighting
It was one of those days when the light is everywhere, coming from nowhere; the clouds were very thick, and so was the snow beneath, and there was no any shadow or brighter spot anywhere. Speaking photographically, the light of the scene could be flipped upside-down or sideways, it would not made a difference, I guess one can call it "very good lighting conditions"Equipment
Canon 20d camera body with Canon's EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, and pair of frozen hands. Technical info of an image: f/6.7; 1/350 sec.; ISO 100; focal length 50mm; manual exposure; partial metering modeInspiration
It was very-very cold! so the view of the mountains drowning in fog in a distance did not look real from the window of the car as we were passing the overlook... There were three photographers there, "parked" with tripods, warm parkas and all; I jumped from the car, positioned myself behind and between them and shot few frames, and had to jump back inside as my fingers quickly froze. Only few days later when back home and to my computer I was glad to see those shots actually "have happened"!Editing
There was very minimal post-processing -- pumping up exposure very slightly before converting an image from RAW, and further, also very slightly, adjusting contrast with the help of Levels and Curves layers in Photoshop before saving it as JPEG.In my camera bag
I take ALL my equipment with me on a trip (just "in case") -- that is Canon 20d camera with Canon's EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens... that's it! :-} I also own a tripod, but do not remember ever using it -- I like a full flexibility while composing the shot, and this lens' Image Stabilizer Technology helps to get a sharper image.Feedback
Do not be intimidated by the challenging conditions of the scene or by a presence of more experienced or better prepared photographers. And work with what you have, whether it is an equipment, or a scene in front of you, -- just go ahead and take that shot, because later, and you know that, you will be sorry you didn't!
