Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Hickory Corners Michigan. This is a sanctuary that rehabilitates injured birds and for the most part returns them back to the wild and their natural habitat if possible.

Time

This was taken about 1 o.clock in the afternoon as that was the time that the showing and demonstration was to begin with the raptors that had been healed and were getting ready to return to the wild once again.

Lighting

For the lighting I used natural, filtered sunlight as this was taken under trees and partial shade and sun.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon 60D, 70-300 MM Sigma lens, and Manfroto tripod. No flash or artificial lighting was used in this Also I used distance from the subject so as not to get her nervous or upset as this owl did not like to have things pointed at it.

Inspiration

For this photo I was informed there was going to be a demonstration and showing of raptors at the sanctuary so I felt this was an excellent chance to be up close to them and capture them in close proximity. Along with that it gave me a chance to show what the bird sanctuary does for injured birds that can be rehabilitated.

Editing

I usually try to do as little post processing as possible in order to keep the photos as natural looking as possible. I do, however, use an editor that comes with the camera, Canon Digital Photo Professional which I find does an excellent job for editing. After that I will use Photoshop Elements 11 for cropping.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I usually carry two cameras, Canon 60D and a Canon T6I both with 18-135 MM lenses, 35MM 2.8 lens for close up macro work this one having a built in ring light with it, Sigma 70-300 MM lens with macro switch, 18-55 MM lens, two remote shutter releases for the cameras to prevent camera shake, 100 MM 2.8 Canon macro/portrait lens, cleaning cloths and lens cleaner, rain/dust sleeve, spare batteries for each camera, spare cards for each camera, fully stocked first aid kit, and then some snacks to munch on for energy if needed and a bottle of water.

Feedback

For shots like this my best advice would be to scout around your area to see if there are nature centers, sanctuaries, small zoos, animal farms, that take animals and birds in that are injured and rehabilitate them so they can be returned to the wild. Become a member of nature preserves, sanctuaries, and other places that take care of animals and birds so that you can get notices of upcoming events or demonstrations they may hold.
