Location
I took this photo just before starting a day hike in Shenandoah National Park.Time
This was taken September 3, 2012 at 9:52 AM. The entire mountain was covered in a fog that morning.Lighting
All of the lighting is natural. I think the shot would have looked even better if I had gotten there just a couple of hours earlier.Equipment
For this photo, I used a Sony NEX-5 with the stock 18-55mm lens, f/5.6, ISO-800, and 1/640 sec. exposure. I held the camera with my hands directly on the road for stability and used a timer.Inspiration
My favorite photos are candid shots and instances that would be difficult or impossible to reproduce. I was crossing the road and noticed how spooky the scene was.Editing
The fog was actually so dense that I couldn't see the road sign when I took the photo. After I got home, I adjusted the contrast and lowered the highlights to bring out the shapes along the road. I also lowered the saturation a bit.In my camera bag
I use a small hard case with foam inserts to securely carry my Sony NEX-5, 18-55mm lens, mini tripod, remote, battery charger, flash, extra batteries, and memory cards. It's a $10 case from a sporting goods store that's completely watertight and small enough that I don't think twice about packing it with me whenever I travel.Feedback
Bring a camera with you whenever you can and take lots and lots of pictures. You can always delete pictures that you don't want but you can't always go back and get a shot that you missed. When a great scene presents itself, the small unobtrusive camera that you're carrying with you is much more valuable than the professional DSLR that you left at home.
