Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my back garden in Liverpool, UK. This is one of the first plants to flower in late winter/ early spring, so I wanted to take the opportunity to capture the scene.

Time

This was taken at an early evening time, around 4pm, about an hour prior to sunset.

Lighting

I think the colours within this image are vivid, and this is only enhanced by the time of day the photograph was taken. At early evening, the sun was beginning to set and the last rays of sum illuminated this plant, providing the stunning scene within this image. I also used a macro to get close to the flower and to make the petals the main focus within the image.

Equipment

This image was taken on a simple camera phone. No tricks, no edits. The phone used was a Nokia Lumia 800. I think the key thing now is that with the advent of camera phones, always have your phone at the ready- you just don't know when a good photo opportunity will arise.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the time of year. Winter in Liverpool can be quite tiresome. It is very grey, with hardly any snow or sun. So I when this plant flowered, I wanted to capture the mood of something more positive - that of spring, when new life, and something to look forward to is on the horizon.

In my camera bag

I normally carry three cameras with me. I always carry a camera phone- you never know when a good opportunity for a photo will arise - and quickly! But I also carry a compact Sony cybershot to capture more defined images on the go. When I want to capture images at a zoom or landscape, I use my bridge camera fuji sf8000d.

Feedback

I recommend that anybody wanting to take a similar image makes full use of the macro function on their cameras and also get to know the settings of their cameras well. This will enhance the overall results and quality of the image.
