This photo was taken in a friend's old college apartment. I was looking for dark spaces... and faucets! The tiny space with no windows was perfect.Time
Honestly, I don't recall. I made this image almost seven years ago now. I'm sure it was at night as I did this entire project after classes and work and was just using whatever spare time I had left. I'm pretty sure I missed the last subway train back to school that night and ended up walking miles back to my dorm with more equipment than I wanted to be carrying.Lighting
There wasn't any! Apart from the time I went in to draw the "water" with the flashlight, it was complete darkness. Door closed, no windows, no flash.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon Rebel XTi with the 18-55mm kit lens. It was the first SLR I had purchased for a college class, and all I had to work with at the time. I set up with a tripod and remote shutter and grabbed a flashlight from the back of a friend's car to draw the light in. I eventually ended up screwing the top off the flashlight to expose the bulb for a crisper line. It was all trial and lots of errors!Inspiration
The photo was taken as part of a series of light drawings for a final exam for a college advanced photography class. I started outdoors late at night in the city shooting larger scale subjects. After a few outings, I wasn't feeling very inspired by the results I was getting so decided to move indoors where I had more control of the environment. There was an old bathroom on the art floor of my college that was really creepy and dark at night. I just decided that would be a good place to start shooting and experimenting using the sink and drawing the water in with the light. I had a lot of success with that shot which led me to make this one and others like it.Editing
From what I remember this bathtub was pink and the colors in the image didn't mesh well with some of the other images I had already shot. I altered them to be a bit more greenish to match better but ultimately ended up rendering the whole set in black and white. I didn't want the focus of the images to be color, I wanted it to be the light, so I stripped the color and was quite happy with the result. In my camera bag
My Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is my trusty sidekick. Nowadays I mostly shoot live music events so that lens is my go-to. My bag is mostly filled with earplugs!Feedback
I think the best advice is to just experiment and have patience. That's how you learn really. I was just a college kid with a camera and a flashlight and no idea what I was doing. If you're in a similar situation (okay, maybe you're not a college kid), be prepared to make a whole bunch of mistakes before you get the result you're looking for and don't give up until you get there!
