Location
I took this photo at Bobby Jo's Diner in Southend. The diner was fairly new so hadn't been used much for photography and film. It was open for business whilst we shot. It was all key with waiting for customers to eat and leave so we could jump in!Time
It was shot throughout the day, but mostly in the afternoon. It was a few years ago now but i remember it being a typical English summer. A bit warm, a bit rainy and a bit sunny!Lighting
We used the natural lighting in the diner. It had huge windows borough out which meant there was constant light on the model. I prefer working with natural light, it allows the person looking at this image to believe it happened...right there and then.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D and my 24-105mm lens. My lens allows me to have a wider range when shooting at a low angle.Inspiration
The model contacted me to produce some nice, clean, pinup style shots for her portfolio. I feel the backdrop is essential to the image, so finding this diner was a real treat! I adore the styling of the 50's, mixing it up with modern day rockabilly with the tattoos and piercings. It sets a rock n roll feel that I love.Editing
I'm all about making the colours pop. I uped the saturation and contrast, added a bit of brightness then levelled it out afterwards. I spend hours cleaning small things like dirt marks on the floor, an unnatractive shadow on the model...the final image is key, so making sure it's clean is my highest priority when it comes to post-production.In my camera bag
I wish I had much more but I literally use just my 5D and my 24-105mm lens.Feedback
To have an interest in the subject helps. Finding a model that truly reflects this too is important. The model in this image is a living rockabilly so with hers and my knowledge, we were able to work together to create a set of images that reflect her. If you are making a model into a pinup, be ready with poses. Pinup is a well known style and if your model doesn't oose this style, it won't pop as much as you want it to. I find that creating a rapport with the model first is essential. I want them to understand that I am here to achieve an awesome image too, so let's work hard to get it! Scouting locations is essential. Never be afraid to ask! Most people would happily supply their amazing backdrop for your shot. All they ask is a small credit. Who knows, you might form a beautiful relationship and become their go to photographer in future! Don't be afraid of different angles. A lot of photographers don't push themselves the extra mile to get the shot. If you are asking a model to roll in mud, be prepared to do it yourself. Some of my most memorable shoots are where I'm laying on a dirty floor just to get the perfect shot!
