This photo i taken in the South of Greenland a small town called Nanortalik. I was on a businesstrip and got ill during friday and all weekend, my eys was very sensitive and i was not able to get outside in the sun during the day as i had forgotten my sunglasses. Saturday night i fount the greatest Aurora Borealis i have seen yet.Time
The photo is taking on a late evening walk, around 9 o'clock at night.Lighting
I wanted the shutter speed to be long enough to capture the love green light but not to long for the light in the windows to "burn out". I experimentet withe several shutterspeeds and this with 10 seconds was the best one.Equipment
For this shot i used my favorite lens, a Zuiko 11-22mm f/2.8 @11mm, mounted at my Olympus e620. I had with me my travel tripod, a Gitzo carbonfiber tripod that weighs just under 1kg.Inspiration
I was walking around the city to find the best place to get a photo of the Northern lights. I have a lot of photos with only the northern lights, and nothing in the foreground. This time i wanted something in the foreground so that i could show to people how it looks. After walking around the town for a couple of hours i fount this place an i was lucky that the northern lights got very strong after 10-15 minutes.Editing
The only post-processing i have done to this picture are some sharpening in Photoshop and then i have straightened it a little. In my camera bag
When i'm traveling i travel light. I only have my 11-22mm lens and my 40-150mm f/4-5.6 lenses with me. I have my Olympus e620 and my Gitzo travel tripod.Feedback
If you want to to capture the northern light, the best advice i can give you is to get out in the cold. You wont see it if you are indoors. Go out and finde the best spot. By the best post i mean find a spot where you have something in the foreground and has the best view to where you thing the northern lights will show.
