Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard, it was a beautiful spring day. It is great to find nature so close to home!

Time

This photo was taken in the mid afternoon. The humming birds were having a feeding frenzy.

Lighting

At the time of day I took the photo, there were no clouds or anything to diffuse my lighting. This photo is taken in direct sunlight.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Canon 6D. I used a 35 year old fixed 200mm fd lens on a old canon fd 2x tele-converter. I use old fd lenses on my Canon 6D with a fd to ef mount converter.

Inspiration

I wanted to push the limits of my old lenses and see how my current camera body could handle it. I was in my kitchen when I noticed several humming birds feeding and flying around in my backyard. I knew it was the perfect opportunity to take some humming bird photos.

Editing

I processed this photo using Lightroom. After I converted this image to black and white I mixed the color channels around to achieve the look I was looking for. I want the viewers eyes to be attracted to the humming bird, so darkening my background plays a big factor in bringing more focus to the bird.

In my camera bag

I have many camera bags with different things, but for general shooting I always make sure I bring a variety of lenses and extra batteries. I will always have my Canon 24-105 f4, it is a super versatile lens and has never let me down. The 24-105 has a good range but I always make sure I have macro and telephoto lenses with me as well. Whether it's my 28mm macro or my 80-210mm Sears lens. I always have a camera support, flash and reverse rings if I need it.

Feedback

The main thing about photographing humming with essentially a 400mm lens is using a fast shutter speed to minimize camera shake and motion blur. Even if that means bumping your ISO high to achieve a fast shutter speed. And when I say fast shutter speed, I mean 1250th of a second and faster.
