Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, containing the geographic South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile (1.6 km) in thickness, which extends to all but the northernmost reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Love that brash leading into the tunnel at the base of the 'berg'. Having travelled to Antarctica, and kayaked whilst there whenever we came across brash we all made a 'b-line' and headed towards it. The way that this is leading out from the base of the large 'berg' is a great leading line. Nice job!

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on my second trip to Antarctica. I've been there three times now and this is still one of my all time favorites.

Time

In Antarctica it is almost 24 hour sunlight, and the golden hour lasts for hours and hours. It really almost never ends.

Lighting

As I've said before, the golden hour in Antarctica lasts virtually all day. I was blown away with the chances to photograph all day and night long. The biggest challenge with the lighting is figuring out which images to keep out of the thousands I took on this trip.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D800E 1/250 f8 iso 200 with a Nikon 16-35mm set at 16mm.

Inspiration

Everything in Antarctica is inspiring. Antarctica is simply pure nature. The beaches are clean with no litter and the sound of silence is everywhere. It is untouched and so far the only place I've found that is truly

Editing

If the camera could only show what we see with our eyes there would never be the need for post processing. To bring out my vision, I added some contrast and adjusted the exposure of the sky. HDR would have fixed everything but tripods are virtually impossible to use when you're floating on a boat in the middle of the ocean.

In my camera bag

As I get older I'm finding that the less I carry the happier I am. Lugging that 600mm up a mountain is best left for the younger crowd these days. Most of the time I'm simply wandering around with one body and lens. Of course on bigger trips I take a lot more but I generally leave most in the car. Sometimes I don't have the right equipment and I miss an opportunity. In those cases I just watch and gain another memory. I truly believe you have to put down the camera and just watch the world sometimes.

Feedback

Most importantly, try to express your feelings through your images. This iceberg was majestic and that is what I wanted to show when people saw it. It's alone out in the ocean, who knows how long it will last. We know they are melting but I want to express how huge and powerful it is. Almost anyone can take a picture, it's your job to make that picture have emotion to the viewer.
