Deception Island is an island in South Shetland off the Antarctic Peninsula, which has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station; it is now a tourist destination and scientific outpost, with research bases being run by Argentina and Spain. Various countries have previously asserted sovereignty, but it is now administered under the Antarctic Treaty System.

This is Deception Island in Antarctica. Deception island is an old abandoned whaling station. If you love old historical buildings and rusted out things, this island is heaven to you! The beach is littered with history and even old whale bones from a forgotten era.ETime
The time of day in Antarctica seldom is an issue for great photography. This day was in the middle of an incredibly windy snowstorm which made all the surfaces beautifully smooth.Lighting
Even an overcast day can lead to beautiful images in Antarctica. The lighting was horrible and gray, but that just added to the somber look of the area and gave the isolated feel that you experience there.Equipment
Camera: NIKON D800E Aperture: f/8.0 ISO: 200 Exposure: 1/250Inspiration
I have been here before, but every time the snow was gone. This was a great opportunity to photograph the island in a totally different setting. I can't stress enough, always revisit locations at different times of the year, you never know what you will find.Editing
If i do any post processing i typically limit it to correcting exposure, highlights, or shadows. However, do the processing that you feel most conveys your own personal vision. There is no right or wrong, it's YOUR vision. In my camera bag
These days as i get older and i want to cary less, i bring as little as possible. As a landscape photographer i try to only carry one body and maybe 2 lenses.... at least that's the attempt. It doesn't always work out that way and usually by the end of the day i'm grumbling and wondering why i brought the 600mm with me that i barely even used.....Feedback
It's simple, get off your computer and stop looking at my images and get out there and make your own! Be adventurous, travel far and remember, over the next hill could be something nobody has ever seen before.
