Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the southwest side of the Big Island of Hawaii

Time

Taken at around 11:00AM

Lighting

It was mostly sunny with a few scattered clouds

Equipment

I used a Canon 20d point in shoot camera which has rubber seals to prevent water damage without the need for a case (for up to 30 feet of water). No flash, no zoom. Just happened to be in the right spot as they had just surfaced and then dove down again

Inspiration

I love snorkeling and dolphins are one of my favorite underwater animals. They are very playful even in the wild. These are spinner dolphins. They are known for spinning out of the water as a natural behavior in the wild. They are often spotted in large bays with a sandy bottom floor. They come to these bays to rest during the day and hunt at night.

Editing

I adjusted the contrast and saturation just a little in Adobe lightroom.

In my camera bag

I use a variety of cameras. For underwater photos I use the Canon 20d or the gopro silver 4. I also use a Canon 50d and 60d for out of the water experiences. Recently I bought a z1 rider gimbal for the gopro to help stabilize my videos and I have been very pleased with the results!

Feedback

Photographing dolphins is mostly about timing. They are wild animals so finding them can sometimes be a big challenge. Also, you must be aware of the rules about how close you can get. You are not allowed to chase the dolphins so you must allow them to come to you. They can be very friendly and tend to get closer to you when you swim calmly. Also, be sure to have a full charge on your batteries, because there are usually dozens of them and dolphins make great photo opportunities.
