Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in St. Louis at the famous landmark arch.

Time

I was attending a photography conference called Shutterfest. A group of us crazies woke up at 5am to go out and capture images at sunrise because we all know what that magical hour is for the best lighting.

Lighting

Some of the photographers brought lighting. I was loving the color in the sky and decided to just capture the mystery of the dark silhouettes and gorgeous morning color.

Equipment

I was using a Canon Mark 2, 24-70 2.8 for the lens at 24mm, hand held at F8. Shutter speed was 1/320 at ISO 400.

Inspiration

Since we were in an amazing city with great architecture it would be such a waste to not take advantage of the time we had. I'm not a morning person but when you capture an image like this and have great company you never regret any lost sleep.

Editing

Most of the editing took place in Lightroom 3. I adjusted the temp, blacks, clarity, vibrance & saturation. I then took it over to photoshop to clone out a light and stand that another photographer was using that got in my frame.

In my camera bag

The Mark 2 body, 85 1.2 and 24-70 2.8. Extra CF cards. The less I carry around the better for me.

Feedback

Waking up early and being out and ready to shoot just before sunrise or just before sun down to get these rich colors is best. Have an idea or concept ahead of time if using people because that light moves fast. Architecture of any kind always looks amazing in this kind of light in my opinion.
