Behind The Lens

Location

Inside a house sitting in the kitchen, so not fantastic light. Moments like this present themselves when you least expect it - and "Roland,s" expression just made me laugh.

Time

Close to the end of the day when the sun was streaming through a side window, on the edge of what the camera was capable of.

Lighting

The lighting was from a side through a window and just starting to change where I was sitting. Sometimes just moving a few feet will alter an image completely and just changing the angle slightly got a better take on this particular image before the expression was lost.

Equipment

As Chase Jarvis says "the best camera is the one you have with you at the time". This was an iPhone 4s. I normally shoot with the Canon 1D mkIII but it is a brick to carry and you miss moments like this. To me a camera is just a tool and the image is everything. I have now switched to shooting micro four thirds with the Olympus OM series camera. Love the system and is not my camera of choice.

Inspiration

The fact that it made me laugh - the subject "Roland" is a character and an expressions tells it all. The simple fact that I included the empty food bowl in the picture create the story and I shot square format and created the composition. We often miss moments like this when we have a technical camera because we are too wrapped up in settings on the camera and forget about composition.

Editing

Post processing was done on the iPhone - snapseed is my app for shots on the phone. This was all shot and processed on the iPhone.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a 1Ds mkII with a 24-105mm f/4 but that can vary depending on what I am shooting. I have just recently switched to an Olympus EM10 with a fixed 24mm (35mm Equivalent) prime. Also shoot with the EM5 MkII. Had issues with the EM10, not very robust camera's. The EM 5 is a much better camera.

Feedback

Always have a camera on hand. Carry what ever camera works for you. You need to know your camera well enough to work the settings with your eyes closed otherwise you lose it. I shoot manual all the time and generally set my ISO at 400 and zero my camera to 1/125s + f/8. If I am in an area where I think there might be a potential shot I generally do a quick check on the lighting and adjust the ISO, shutter speed and the f-stop to a range that is workable and easy to adjust for a snap shot. I always shoot through the view finder and have the basic rules of composition in my head so that I see the shot before I lift the camera to my eye. Make your shot as clean as you can and the big killer for that is background clutter. Try and tell a story with your images otherwise it is just a snapshot. If I am in an area where the light is relatively consistent I get the camera settings in the range to suit the light for quick shots.
