Location
Taken on South Fork of the Shoshone River outside of Cody, WY.Time
Late afternoonLighting
It probably late morning, that seems to be when the Big Horns are most active during the rut.Equipment
Pentax SF1N with Pentax 500 4.5 @5.6 lens, Bogen Tripod.Inspiration
I enjoy photographing wildlife and big horn sheep are a favorite during the rut. This dominant ram approached close enough for me to take this "head shot" photo.Editing
Didn't need to and I took this several years ago before I had Lightroom or advanced Photoshop. In my camera bag
Normally I take two Pentax DSLRs, one with a 50-500 Sigma lens and one with a Sigma 28-200 Macro, Usually a bean bag to shoot out the window. I do take my tripod now with a gimbal head. I just bought a Sony RX10 111, at age 80, I need to cut down the weight of my equipment and so far, it is a fantastic camera. I am hoping to catch the elk rut shortly.Feedback
First of all learn where wildlife hangs out, no matter what species you are looking for. I consider birth of newborns and the rut to be the best times to photograph most critters, whether it is sage grouse in early spring or Big Horn rams in December. There are a lot of elk and deer in that same area which is near Cody, WY.
