Behind The Lens

Location

Now here's a place that is called the rock by those who fish the shores, so wild are the currents that there is a saying, between the rock and the cliff - and in the winter swells 30 meter waves explode into the sunset. There is a moment when a wave hangs, like a cartoon character, in the air. That's the moment to take the shot.

Time

It's a sunset shot and its winter so about tea time.

Lighting

The photos that come out of a storm are dull. But the storms in Newfoundland cross the ocean and arrive without the bad weather. A sunset and a swell, perfect lighting.

Equipment

I use a Canon 5ds Manfrotto tripod and a tea-towel.

Inspiration

The endless changes that occur when the immovable shore and the restless ocean meet

Editing

la little contrast and highlight recovery, plus a lot of work. taking Raw with waves is tricky. The highlights have not to be blown-out and and to keep the darks of the cliff as some detail they have to be reclaimed in post processing.

In my camera bag

Apart from the camera, and a smaller Fujifilm x20 I carry a wide angle lense, three spare batteries, spare memory cards and a set of filters.

Feedback

Be safe. Its all to easy to underestimate the sheer power of these waves. Find a snug place out of the wind with a good view. Set up gear, focus and wait for the moment. Push the highlights up as far as you can without them being blown.
