Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in the forests of Kalikesam in Kanyakumari District, India. This place is famous for the beauty of the rocks, the dense rubber plantations, and a river that flows through the mountainous rocks that have made the rocks polished and buttery smooth that you find no rock or stone with a sharp edge. They look like huge pebbles. Though I say this place is beautiful, it's not the usual mountainous green beauty u see here; instead, it's kind of ruggedly and brownishly beautiful. This spot is also known for its tragic deaths that happen every year. A number of people have drowned in this river because of its sudden rise in water level and others getting trapped between huge rocks as a result of pebbled-rocks making them skid and hence getting their feet locked underwater. This is only my fourth visit to this place though located within our district.

Time

I was v.happy about this visit because it was my first visit to the forest with friends after I owned a DSLR. We reached by noon; the sun scorching so hot. This was shot around 1 p.m.

Lighting

It was the natural sunlight that made me pull out the cam immediately and shoot this. The sunlight was just glittering or playing in the water, I should say. The rocks behind the bather were dark; it was the beauty of sunlight glitter at some spots in the river flow that made the scene vibrant. I was happy I clicked this exactly when the person splashed water on his face and the droplets diffused around.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS-550D (Rebel T2i) with the basic 18-55mm lens. Flash was not used.

Inspiration

It was the light that focused on the person and the glittery water on his right that made me shoot this. The dark areas in the water contrasted the glittery shine altogether. The water was clear with the pebbles seen underneath. The only good thing I could do was compose the shot.

Editing

Though I started out like I hated post-processing, by the time I took this photo, I already knew what post-processing could do to enhance an image's beauty. I haven't learnt Photoshop, but would like to. Once having installed Adobe Lightroom, everything just changed; it heightened my photographic spirits and proved that I could do something with a software without any kind of tutorial. I loved Lightroom because it just involved with adjusting light. I moved the sliders to get a tone like this. This looked beautiful to me - it didn't take anything out of the image except add this tone that looked perfect to me.

In my camera bag

I still have equipment that suits a beginner - the cam (here, Canon EOS-550D with 18-55mm kit lens), an additional battery, two pieces of memory card, a lens cleaner.

Feedback

I really think I'm not good at it.
