Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken in Yosemite National Park, close to one of the small parking turnouts along the Merced River. It is one of the spots highlighted in Michael Frye's book The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite.Time
This was taken at 6:30, just as the sun was starting to hit the tops of the mountains. It was the middle of February, so sunrise was a little later in the morning that day.Lighting
This was a great time to be shooting - it was still blue hour, and the sun was just starting to spill onto the mountains. The range was too much for my camera to capture in one shot, so I bracketed under and over to make sure I captured the entire dynamic range.Equipment
I used a Canon 60D and Canon's 24-105 f/4 lens. I have a Manfrotto tripod and ball head.Inspiration
This was my first trip to Yosemite, and I wanted to make sure I got a number of the iconic images. I had studied Michael Frye's book, and had a plan for a number of the stops he recommended. When I stopped at this site and saw the fog over the river, I knew that this was the place to be.Editing
There was quite a bit of post processing in this. After fine tuning the RAW images, I exported them and merged them into an HDR using Photomatix. Then I brought the HDR image and two of the original imaged into photoshop and blended them together to make the image more realistic. Then I did some work on the color and detail. In my camera bag
The 24-105 has been in my bag forever. That is the first higher end lens I have bought, and since then it has gone all over the world with me. Since I shoot a lot of landscapes I don't need anything faster, and this has a great range. At the time I was using the 60D I also used a sigma 12-20 to go even wider. I often use a polarizer and a neutral density filter to cut down the light.Feedback
If you're going to a new place, definitely do your research. Using Michael Frye's book was a huge help that gave me a lot of ideas and let me plan before we even got there. I made use of the Photographer's Ephemeris to know when sunrise was going to happen and could plan when to get up. Also, be willing to go out when nobody else wants to. I took this in February, and the park was almost empty. I was the only one out at this location, and didn't see another person until much later.
