Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Botany Bay Plantation on the coast of South Carolina in March at sunset.

Time

I took this photo in the evening, waiting for the vivid colors of sunset to kick in! It was taken on March 8, 2014 at 7:14 PM.

Lighting

I actually had my back to the beautiful sunset that was happening! But I heard my photography teacher in my head saying "look outside the box", so I looked around instead of at the obvious sunset. Don't get me wrong, I took some great sunset pictures too!

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D7000, 18-55 lens. No flash, no tripod, no filters...no other equipment.

Inspiration

I just loved the perfect circle in the roots of this fallen tree and wanted to use it to frame my picture. The beautiful sunset was about to happen behind me so I had an extra few minutes to look for something else to shoot.

Editing

I shot this in jpeg. I did little post-processing... I turned up the contrast a little, saturated the colors some, and of course sharpened it. I'm not great at PhotoShop so I just do the basics and try my best to get my best shot in the camera.

In my camera bag

My regular bag that goes on my shoulder as I shoot has my D7000, my new lens 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3, 50mm f/1.8 lens, my external flash, my favorite lens filters (blue graduated, orange graduated, adjustable ND, and a polarized), a hood for my 18-300mm lens. And miscellaneous goodies: wireless shutter remote, extra batteries, extra memory cards, lens cleaning cloth, even a poncho if I get caught in the rain!

Feedback

I'm an amateur at this, so I don't know if I really have any valuable advice. I get an image in my head and then I set out to capture it with my camera. Sometimes I try NOT to shoot the obvious and try to find something else to get my creative juices flowing. But most of all, have fun and learn something new about my camera each time I go shooting!
