Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the center of Bangkok, during the SongKran Water Festival, just down the road road from Siam.

Time

I took this late afternoon after walking halfway across city center from Chinatown. It was a hot, sunny day with zero clouds, nicely lighting up the side of this building.

Lighting

I wanted high contrast between the bright side of the building with the direct sun, and the dark areas of the building hidden by it's unique architecture.

Equipment

This was taken using a Canon 600D. It was the water festival, so I had all my gear wrapped in plastic to prevent damage, but it was so hot the camera kept shutting down. Not time to stop with a tripod, would have made me an easy target for a water fight.

Inspiration

I approached this building as I was looking for a coffee shop with AC to rest after hours of taking photography. As I got close, I noticed when I looked up the unique architecture and the way the light played with the different edges. I managed to get a great perspective, making it look like it was pushing towards the sky.

Editing

I only do minimal post-processing. This was shot in monochrome-RAW. I imported into Lightroom, and balanced out the highlights with some minor clarity adjust.

In my camera bag

When I took this photo I always had my 600D and 2 lenses. Now I've upgraded to a Canon 70D. On the weekdays I always carry this in a small LowPro bag with a 55-250mm Canon F/4 attached, and normally a Canon 50mm F/1.8. On the weekends I go all out, with all my Lenses in a nice shoulder bag, my tripod, cleaning material, spare batteries and cable to download to laptops and tablets.

Feedback

My only advice is to keep looking where others fail to look. Find unique angles, get down low and don't be afraid to take shots away from your view finder and trust your judgment.
