Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Newcastle so almost all of my photos are taken in the North East. This particular photo was taken a few years ago in Gateshead, Whickham area in a wood behind where my grandma lives. I had never really been there before and I was looking for new and different places to carry out a photo shoot with my friend, who is also very interested in photography.

Time

It was September, mid afternoon when this was taken just as it was about to rain which meant having to abandoned the shoot early to avoid damaging my camera.

Lighting

I didn't use any kind of fancy lighting for this with it being one of my first shoots, so I had to just rely on the natural light being enough. The weather was neutral that day which I think made it easy to photograph with there not being much changes in light.

Equipment

This was when I was just getting in to photography so I didn't have much equipment or experience then, just my first DSLR (Nikon D3100) which I didn't really know how to use and an old wobbly tripod I had lent from my parents. I was also lucky to have had Photoshop at home and at school in which I would sit for hours trying to create something unusual looking.

Inspiration

This was taken for my art coursework and at the time I was very drawn to unusual, surreal and manipulated images. I took all my inspiration from photographers I had found on the internet using them for my coursework. I also had a lot of inspiration from my art/photography teacher who always had lots of crazy ideas, advising me on how to manipulate my photographs and showing me examples from different books and websites. For a part of my coursework I chose to look at the film 'Alice in Wonderland' mainly looking at the scene when she falls down the rabbit hole and how all the different objects spin around her. I also looked at Salvador Dali, in particular the persistence of memory painting which is why I simply Photoshoped a clock into the corner. I also decided to duplicate my self (the girl in the photo) to symbolise moments in time, along with splitting the photo up into different raised 3D blocks, rather than a slow moving melting effect which Salvador Dali creates; But I like the viewer to make their own interpretation of my work When I'm taking and editing a photo I always try to put my own spin on it, trying to come up with something that I haven't really seen before. This image is very different to the ones I create now as I like to keep my photos more natural looking which you can see at: www.flickr.com/yando15

Editing

As you can probably see I did do a lot of editing on this image. A lot of it was just experimenting and learning my way around Photoshop. The first thing I did was invert the photograph and then duplicate myself a few times. After that I began to look at different ways of colouring my image using the curves tool and the hue and saturation tool. I was also looking at was of using the layers by adding in a separate photograph of the clock after using the liquefy tool to distort it slightly. I then finished of by cutting out, moving, bring forward and pushing back different parts of the image, adding shadows to it giving them a 3D effect.

In my camera bag

At the time when I took that photo I didn't really have any equipment at all, but now I always have my Nikon D3300, my 50mm and wide angle and depending on the shoot I'm doing; I may also have with me my external flash, tripod, fish eye lens and filters.

Feedback

This is image wasn't really planned, I just organised a day for me and my good friend to go on a little experimental shoot for our art coursework and see what happened. Afterwards I then continued to experiment with editing and this was one of the final outcomes. With this photograph I cant really give much technical advice but I can say that photography is all about experimenting and learning new things which 3 years later I am still doing, and will continue to do.
