Behind The Lens

Location

Port Hueneme, California. The Pier City Park.

Time

It was approximately 30 minutes before sundown, I took my Grandson out for a photo excursion because he had a brand new digital camera. The pier is only a few miles from his home and the sky looked like an ideal time to shoot the pier.

Lighting

Several photos were taken in the one hour twilight time period, this one shows local fishermen trying for that last catch before fishing time concludes for the day. In California fishing begins 1 hour before sunrise and closes at 1 hour after sundown. Looking closely you can see Sandpipers catching their dinner meal. Looking between the pilings you can see Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands, members of the Channel Islands.

Equipment

Throughout this shooting session I used a Canon EOS 1000D camera, the 18 - 70mm lens, a tripod, shutter release cable, and bracketed exposures for inclusion in HDR processing.

Inspiration

The late Fall and early Winter seasons usually create dramatic photographic opportunities along the Pacific West Coast, it was an ideal moment to geach my 11 year old Grandson the fine art of photography.

Editing

Post Processing included merging three exposures into a HDR processing application, balancing the exposure to re-capture the mood of the scene at the moment the eyes saw the scene. Cropping to a standard size for printing, and retaining the original resolution from the camera.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 1000D body, 18 - 70mm lens, 70 - 300mm lens, flash bracket, ETTL external flash, shutter release cable, lens caps, owners manual, back-up batteries.

Feedback

Understand as much about exposure and the three key factors controlling exposure. Once you have these mastered you can begin to enjoy Post Processing, creating your vision of the scene, and spend your valuable time outside the digital darkroom.
