Location
This photo was taken from Ashley Point aka The Battery overlooking the Ashley River in Charleston SC.Time
After spending the day walking around Charleston trying to find some inspiration for some (hopefully) great photos, I was just a few feet away from loading up into the car when I looked up at this great view across the river. I took several shots just hoping to end up with something close to what I was looking at over the water. This was at 4:59 pm on January 15, 2014.Lighting
I just tried to capture all the great lighting being provided by nature itself. The colors created here by nature just can't be recreated the same any other way.Equipment
This wast taken with a Canon T3i with an 18-55mm lens. I shot at 1/800 sec., f/5, iso 100 @ 32mm. I took this one handheld with no tripod or flash.Inspiration
I was looking for some scene that just grabbed me and begged to be photoed all day, after not having gotten that feeling I was about to get into the car to head home when there was this great sunset developing right in front of me. I knew this was the shot I had waited for all day and hoped I would be able to take home something close to what I was seeing in front of me.Editing
Since I have never take any lessons on photography I really am just trying to make my photos look like what I actually saw any way I can. Man is this hard to do sometimes. For this photo it just looked a little flat without all the great colors that I saw that day, so after some online reading I went into photoshop and tone mapped the image in an attempt to bring out the colors as I remember them.In my camera bag
I used to carry a Canon T3i with 18-55mm & 50mm 1.8, but last year I have moved away from Canon to Pentax. I now carry a K-3 and K-01 with Pentax 18-55mm, 28-80mm, 50mm f/2 and my go to set up being the K-3 with Tamron AF18-200mm. I also carry a Manfrotto monopod and an assortment of cokin filters that I really have much to learn about using correctly.Feedback
My advise for anyone that wants to take better photos and is bound and determined to learn it on your own like me. Just be patient, find out what types of photos you really want to take and then practice practice practice. With sunset or sunrise always go out early and find your spot then just wait until you see the shot you really want. Always keep in mind that every day is different with nature and just because you don't see it today does not mean it won't be there tomorrow. Never get discouraged with nature as you have no control over it. Be patient! Oh and make sure you invest in the best tripod you can afford, it will make a big difference. Never give up you will learn what all those buttons and dials can do for your photos.
