Behind The Lens

Location
At Venice carnival. Carnivals, street theatres and other street events are my favorite theme. This photo was taken on my second visit to Venice carnival.
Time
Late afternoon.
Lighting
That year there was a bad weather most of the days of the carnival. The day I was there was no exception. It was raining most of the day, so there was not so much masks and those that apear, were under covered halls. The lightning was poor and the mass of photographers around models was huge. There was a lot of struggle to get a good position for shooting. The sky was hoplessly croweded with clouds, so it was pointless waiting for better lightning or some golden hours effect.
Equipment
I used my Nikon DSLR and 50mm 1.8 prime lens and 70-200mm 2.8 zoom lens. There was not a chance to use tripod because the place was crowded and in most cases flash was also useless despite the fact that in more "normal" situations it would be the best solution for taking that kind of photo.
Inspiration
I like shooting carnivals, street perfomances and similar stuff. And carnival in Venice is more than just photogenic. I took several shots of this model. I changed composition, point of view and framing. This was the last shot in the series. What makes it standing out of the rest is the look of the model, when she (or he, who knows) turned towards me for a second. Since I already composed a frame with the reflection in the mirror before, this look was the only think I was waiting for.
Editing
I shoot RAW so I do some usual corections of lightning and colour vibration in Camera raw programme.
In my camera bag
If it's possible I like to have my bag with all seven different lenses at hand. But in case like here, where I knew that the photoshooting will be a struggle to get in the right position in the crowd, I minimise my equipment to camera, two lenses and a flash.
Feedback
There are two basic way to approach to take photos of performers on ocasions like Venice carnival. You may ask the performers to pose for you. Some will do that, some will ask you to pay for this and some will refuse because they have their own show in mind. The other way is to just watch and follow the situation and wait for the proper moment when something interesting will increase. Most of the masks will be quite willing to interact with you in some way. I prefer this second approach. For this photo I first find a good position close enough to the model and done some photos just to check the adjustments and focus (this was taken at f3.2 and I wanted focus on the area around eyes). Than I moved just enough to get the masks reflection in the mirror in her hand and waited that she gave me a look. I was lucky, because she posed for many other photographers around and this look toward me only last for a second or two. But I was prepared, made two fast shots and this is the one that fullfill my idea.
