Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the Flamsbanna railway climbing up to the Vatnahalsen hotel. It sits high above Aurlandsfjord and with no car routes only the railway.

Time

Taken on the 30th of May on a cloudy changeable day. Climbing up hill at a steady pace meant I needed to keep the shutter fairly high but due to the dull overcast conditions I had to bump up the iso to 1250 to get a shutter speed of 1/200

Lighting

It wasn't the best light due to the time of day and of course as I was moving on a train through high sided rock faces the light changed rapidly. However the partial cloud cover diffused the harsh afternoon sun so still managed to get f/10.

Equipment

This shot was hand held hence the need for a higher shutter speed. I used my canon 5D mk3 and my trusty 24-70mm L lens. It was just a very basic travelling set up.

Inspiration

I had planned the Flamsbanna railway trip as I knew it had many landscape opportunities on the 12.5 k climb to Vatnahalsen. I took sever images on the way and down but this one was my favourite. My inspiration was and still is the sheer beauty of that part of the world and yes I will return.

Editing

I shoot everthing in Raw so I do my initial process in Lightroom 5. for this image I done my usual routine with the white and black point adjustments , reducing the high light way down to bring back detail and of course bumping up the the shadow slider to lift the shadow on the rocks. Colour balance was warmed up a little as it looked to blue and cold. I left sharpening at 25 on the slider the default for Lr and masked off the sharpening at 73 on the slider so it only sharpened the outlines. I had some noise with the iso at 1250 and also with some of the adjustments made adding to the noise. So used the luminance silder and to 35 and finished with enabling the profile correction.

In my camera bag

I use two bags one for lighting gear and one for the cameras and lenses. My bag his a Low-pro and has A canon 5D mark 3 , canon 1D mark 3 and a canon 500D. Lenses I have canon 70-200 L f/2.8, canon 24-70 L f/2.8, canon 50mm f/1.8 and my newest one the canon 85mm L f/1.2. Filters I have Lee filter sys with the soft ND grads and a 16 stop firecrest but still struggling to find a proper job for it. FW-L filter. A third party intervalometer , sever white balance devices but usually end up just using the cameras meter. spare batteries. This bag weighs a ton and I usually take out what I not using and leave in the boot. My other bag a Tamrac pro 8 I have speed lights in it two 600 ex-rt and commander and two third party flashes , Two rouge flash benders and a sekonic light meter L 358. spare memory. I also use the Manfrotto 350B tripod.

Feedback

I live and shoot in the Scottish highlands , So i'm blessed with great scenery and dramatic weather. All you have to do is get out there and be ready for what comes your way. A bit of planning will helps as with a lot of patience. Enjoy what your doing , sometimes you may visit the same place many times before you get what you want. It is what you want and not others, they will interpret your work in many different ways.
