Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Alltan Dubh Wester Ross Scottish Highlands.

Time

This was taken late morning early November. The sun was bright and harsh that day.

Lighting

The sun was high in the sky as it was getting towards lunchtime. Blue skies but a very harsh light.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D MkIII with a 24-70mm lens on a Manfrotto 350B tripod. I used a 10 stop ND filter to get a long enough shutter speed to blur the water.

Inspiration

To be honest I wanted to get some practise in with the 10 stop Nd filter. So with this in mind I thought of this place with the fast flowing water. I took many shots on a trial and error basis to find out what was working for me.

Editing

I did very little to this image in post. I did adjust the levels a bit and lift some of the shadows.

In my camera bag

Canon bodies a 5D MKII and the crop sensor Canon 500D , There main lenses in the bag 50 f1.8 , 24-70mm f2.8mm and the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. I have the Canon 600 ex-rt , 480exII exII speed-lite and the yougnuo 460. For off camera flash I have the ST-E3-RT transmitter in the bag. The 10 stop ND filter & of course the circular polariser.

Feedback

Try and keep up wind of the spray or buy a mini hand held fan to keep the mist off the lens. Also keep a check that there is no spray on your lens. You don't need to get to close to the water. Stack your polariser filter on top of your 10 stop if you need to reduce your shutter speed more. Try and get there in good light early or at sunset.
