The photo was taken at Melbourne zooTime
It was taken at about midday on a lovely sunny weekendLighting
The bright sunlight gave me a chance to show definition on the emu’s coat which can be challengingEquipment
I used my canon 600D with a Tamron 16-300 lens. The picture was taken hand held, no flash (I think flashing a light in an emu’s eyes may have ended in tears....mine!)Inspiration
Emu’s are such characters, their body language and postures make them fun to watch. At Melbourne zoo the emu’s roam in an open compound so you have no barriers between you. I started taking photos from a little distance away and then just kept stepping closer until I had the bird looking directly at me. I wanted to try and make sure I had the bird nicely in focus and the background completely blurred so I am very happy with the outcome.Editing
I think the only processing required was a touch of lightening to bring out more detail. In my camera bag
I have the usual lens cleaning equipment. A tamron 16-300 lens and a Canon 50mm macro lens, a 10 stop ND filter and a Polarising filter, a remote exposure device, small torch, spare battery and a rain hood.Feedback
Patience is a virtue....and don’t go to the zoo during the school holidays!!! With all wildlife photos I think you have lucky days and unlucky. This was an emu in a good and patient mood and had probably just been fed so was happy to pose for me.
