Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture during a stop off on my way to Wolsztyn, Poland. I think it was the first trip I planned to take to use my new camera. The break in the journey was unexpected as well as the mist that morning. I pulled over, got out and tried various compositions with the mist, road, trees and that meadow. The result, though half-unforeseen, was the perfect place to set my creativity free and aim my mind, along with the lens, towards the unveiling outcome.

Time

It was not an early morning when usually mists cover things. This was the time when the mist was lifting. Later it turned out it was the clearest hour of the day. The air got foggy again and contributed to some other nice shots.

Lighting

I love the grayish aura of the fog. It is always somewhat refreshing – the humid tranquility of still air and mysterious shapes forming in very unexpected ways – giving you a unique visual experience. I think that what makes my picture interesting is the play of shades of gray in each plane against a brighter background of fog, which has been undisturbed by any silhouette.

Equipment

One of the most compelling things about mist is the juxtaposition of the normally hard objects and the softness of the haze that is imposed on them. I used a tripod to make sure that sharp contours will remain in contrast with the blur surrounding them. As I was shooting from a distance, the tripod also supported my EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens mounted to Canon EOS REBEL T3. I guess you don’t need very sophisticated equipment to enjoy your time, take in and process some of the impressions Mother Nature surprises you with at times.

Inspiration

Nothing specific inspired me to take this particular picture. On the contrary, I got inspired by it later when I was looking through my photos. It was one of many I took during that stop off. I thought that the frame I had chosen was perfect for me and decided to share on Viewbug. The spark, though, must have been coming from the intangible magic the mist had cast over the meadow.

Editing

I didn’t use any post-processing. The picture was taken before I discovered the blessing of Photoshop :)

In my camera bag

My equipment is pretty basic. I have a Canon EOS REBEL T3 and two lenses: an EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III and EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II. Now I don’t even have a tripod. As much as it is an impediment at times, it also gives me a lot of personal satisfaction to find interesting places/objects to support the camera when needed. I am also not a gear freak. In photography it’s the pictures I care about most. Although I wouldn’t mind an upgrade :)

Feedback

I am an amateur photographer and there is still so much to learn for me. I find it a little bit odd to advise people but my photo adventure thus far taught me patience and concentration. I also started to notice things I hadn’t before. I would say that the combination of good eye, focus and chill contributed to taking that picture. I find photography to be an exercise in creativity where your gear is secondary to your eye and inspiration. I would actually recommend taking up drawing :)
