Location
My favourite location, mountain Kirkjufell at Snæfellsnes peninsula, west part of Iceland. The mountain and it´s surrounding is magical - the mountain is standing alone, graceful and majestic, then there is a beautiful river, waterfalls and lake to use for the forground in the photo shoot. Usually when I come there there are around 10-40 people taking pictures there, this night I think they where around 30 all over the place.Time
This picture was taken at 24:01 in the end of March this year. It was a quiet and still night with a clear sky.Lighting
The northern light took care of the lighting this time.Equipment
I was using canon 5DM3 and canon lens 16-35mm II f/2.8, a manfrotto tripod and a hahnel remote control. For this photo shoot I took the picture at 10sec exposure, f/2.8 aperture, 16mm focal length and 6400 iso. In some cases when I shooting the northern lights and trying to get their reflection from the water I put a cloth or my hand over the upper half of the lens blocking the northern lights it self during the take and try to increase the reflection on the water.Inspiration
I saw earlier this day that the forecast was good for this part of the country, clear sky and possibility of Northern lights. It is almost two hours drive from my home to go there. Kirkjufell and it's surrounding is magical and you can always find a new angle / location to shoot the mountain.Editing
I did not have to do very much for this picture, I fixed the horizon and some lens correction. Then I took out some light coming from other photographers close by and added some contrast to it. With Northern lights you need to be careful with the post processing because if you want to make the light more colourful or stronger you can risk that they burn out or look awkward. In my camera bag
I usually have my camera, canon 5DM3, my three lenses - 50mm f2.8, 16-35mm II f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. I have also in my bag my Lee filter collection, 580EX flash and my mafrotto tripod.Feedback
Good equipment is important for northern light photo shoot, for me it is important to take the picture in the shortest time and to do so you need a camera that allows you to go up to iso 6400 and a bright lens. Also you need a steady tripod and a little handheld flash light to guide the way - can be difficult during dark night to find your way to the location or back to the car.
