Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a visit to the San Diego zoo. I wanted to catch this guy in his natural state, sleepy!

Time

Koalas sleep between 16 to 18 hours per day, so this photo could have been taken anytime. However, it was taken in the late afternoon, probably around 4 to 5pm. Luckily the branches provided enough shade so the photo was not overexposed.

Lighting

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Nikon D3100, with a 55-200mm lens. I did not use any other equipment.

Inspiration

As a general matter, I enjoy taking photos of nature and animals. I am also particular to close up shots, and I enjoyed showing this koala in his moment of quiet time. What I liked about this particular photo opportunity is that it allowed me to capture different textures, including the fuzziness of the koala, the coarseness of the rope, the peeling tree bark, and the crinkling leaves.

Editing

I only did minimal touch ups (e.g., lighting and contrast) on Picasa 3.

In my camera bag

I don't carry a lot of equipment. I have my Nikon camera, two lenses (one for distance and one for close ups), and a battery charger. I have a bad habit of forgetting to charge my camera battery, and there have been times where I've been traveling and needed to acquire a new charger. For example, in Mexico, I had to try to find an electronics store and use my high school Spanish language skills to track down a charger - it worked! But now I always keep a charger (or two) handy.

Feedback

Because I like to take photos of animals, I frequently shoot at zoos. Certain zoos are better than others, though, as to whether they will let you get up close to the animals and whether they have fencing or other barriers that will interfere with your capture. The San Diego zoo provides a good shooting atmosphere and has a wide variety of animals. Be prepared for a long day of walking and take as many photos as you can to maximize the number of great shots you get. Bring extra memory cards!
