In your face POV and effective use of depth of field produces a visually powerful and emotionally charged image.

Thanks all. I just realized that this photo won "Featured" in February. Does anyone know who makes these selections and what is the criteria?

Behind The Lens

Location

I won't go into the detail of my first attempts as they were not only unsuccessful, but dangerous. Finally. I took this photo by stuffing a (friend's) revolver between two sofa cushions in my living room. The trick in taking the photo safely was to physically take the bullet out of the chamber (barrel) before taking the shot (no pun intended), then cloning the bullet on the lower right into the chamber

Time

Afternoon

Lighting

Natural daylight. The exif shows the aperture was set at 7.1. I don't remember the details of my thinking at the time but I believe if I had opened it up more, the mid-background (chamber) would have been blurred too much for the effect I wanted.

Equipment

Olympus E-500 Lens Olympus 50-200mm F2.8 (set at 158mm)

Inspiration

While driving home one day I was trying to think of how to create a unique photo that demonstrated the power of depth of field and had an impact that caught the viewer's attention. Then this image just came to me.

Editing

I enhanced the saturation, and as mentioned above, cloned the bullet into the chamber.

In my camera bag

I have a variety of lenses and cameras and when I go out to shoot photos I decide before leaving which equipment I need for the task I plan. But the equipment I almost always have with me besides the camera and lenses are a tripod and an AC power adapter that plugs into either an outlet or into my car in the event my batteries run out.

Feedback

If anyone were to try to imitate this photo, or one like it: MAKE SURE the chamber is EMPTY!!
