Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in our living room on our couch.

Time

This photo was taken October 22, 2012, at 6:18 pm.

Lighting

I used a Canon 430EXii speedlite and bounced the light off the ceiling.

Equipment

This was taken hand held with a Canon Rebel XSi. I used a Canon 430EXii speedlite and bounced the light off the ceiling. ISO 400, 1/125, f/6.3.

Inspiration

This photo was taken in October 2012 of my daughter and our little pom, Foxie, who passed away the following month, November 2012. My daughter was lying on the couch all cuddled up in a blanket and picked up Foxie to snuggle her. This was a moment to cherish so I grabbed my camera to document this moment. Now that Foxie is no longer with us, we can still look back on this photo and remember her and sweet times like this.

Editing

Post processing consisted of turning the photo to black and white, increasing the blacks and brightness level as well as increasing the shadows.

In my camera bag

My current camera bag has a Canon 6D (upgraded from the Canon Rebel) with my go-to lens a Canon 24-105 mm f/4 L, 430 EXii speedlite, extra memory cards and a spare camera battery.

Feedback

Be alert for special moments and alway keep your camera out and ready to pick up and shoot. Capturing moments requires you to be attentive to what is around you. Be observant of what would make a great photo and then learn how to shoot in manual mode to create the photo you desire, not what the camera takes on auto shooting. Know you focal point and focus on it. Here my focal point was the dog so I focused in on the dog's face to bring out the detail of the face. While the colored version was nice, black and white created the mood I intended for this photo.
