Some friends and I spent a long, hot day in the forest, to create some great shots in a bluebell field. Ticks, spiders, and gnats, all joined us. People don't grasp the idea of how much work needs to go into shots like this, and I hope this will get more to appreciate our creations.

My key light was a PCB Alienbees B800 with a socked beauty dish. I would've used a softbox, but the one that I currently owned at the time took about 2 years to put together. The sun was behind her, and also a bare Canon 580ex ii camera rightEquipment

With a lot of my photos, I find that I like frozen motion, especially with garments. The model was a friend of mine, and she refuses to shoot anything with me, unless it's out-of-the-box. So I knew I had my work cut out for me. The week before I had taken pictures of the area when it had tons of Bluebell flowers, and I thought it'd be perfect for the shot. I was warned that those flowers don't last long, so I was taking a chance. My crew trekked out in the woods and across a stream that was a few feet high to get here. Unfortunately, most of the flowers were gone, but that wasn't going to stop me. A lot of preparation goes into a shot like this. I had a sheet that I brought that was roughly the same color as the dress, so we clipped it on and had an assistant flop it around. We got a few good looks from it but this was by far the best!Editing
I did a bunch of dodge/burn mostly. I had to clone out seam of the sheet where it met with the dress. Also, I had to liquefy the dress a bit to round out the edges. I added a slight sun ray, but not much. Everything else was perfect out of camera. In my camera bag

Don't give up on the shot. It was very hot. We shot this in the middle of the summer. Ticks and spiders were crawling everywhere! The pic always tells a different story. It's never as easy as it looks. I believe I had 3-4 people with me that day, and they all did a lot of work! When doing motion-freeze shots like this it usually takes a lot of patience because the first few are never perfect. Worse case scenario, composite shots from different pics and piece them together.
