Lewisville, TX at a carnival set up in the parking lot of a failing mall.Time
When this carnival set up, I took it as a great opportunity to practice night photography where the subjects would create their own light source. It was complete dark, around 8 p.m. in the fall.Lighting
I was so excited about how the swing ride actually produced it's own light, it was the only light source I used.Equipment
My digital camera has always been a Nikon D3000, no flash, tilting heavily on a monopod to get the lovely tilt skyward.Inspiration
I loved the negative space the sky created around the swing ride all on it's own, making it look like this beautiful, gaudy source of eye grabbing light against the night.Editing
The only post processing I did was punching the color and contrast up a little, so the lights looked as bright as they did in person.In my camera bag

As long as your subject is inanimate and not moving, (I had a few incredibly beautiful but incredibly blurry versions of when the ride was moving), long exposures are the best to capture the colors and details at night. Having a good light source as your focal point and a steady tripod/monopod will keep a shot like this clean and sharp.
