Location
This was shot in the central city area of Sydney. I was walking between meetings and looked up. I was so excited to see the architecture and the clouds in cahoots.Time
I shot this picture in the late afternoon of a summers day. A storm was brewing and the clouds were beginning to develop while the sky darkened.Lighting
Even though this is largely natural light, I waited and timed the shot precisely to capture the position of the clouds, which were bouncing the key source back into the building. The cloud on the left pushed soft light onto the side of the building and the top light bounced in off the other cloud. A very soft front fill was supplied by the flash.Equipment
Canon 5D 24MM/105MM Ultrasonic hand held 580 EX SpeedlightInspiration
I love architecture especially when embraced by nature. The lines of the building seemed to reach up and touch the sky while the hardness of the structure contrasts perfectly with the softness of the clouds.Editing
Very little. I did a basic exposure correction and tonal balancing in Lightroom while adding a little green to the high lights. The light rays are a Photoshop plug in and a soft vignette was added to the bottom of frame as a final element pushing the eye to the top of the buildingIn my camera bag
I carry a Canon 5D MK2 and a MK3 Canon 100-400mm 24-105mm and a 16-35mm all Ultrasonic. A 580 EX speedlight and a S95 always at the ready. I have a variable ND and a polariser. I also have a Manfrotto mono pod with me to eliminate any North South movement on long exposures.Feedback
Be aware of your surroundings as much as possible. It is difficult when you are going about your day and not specifically on a shoot, but often this is when an opportunity presents itself. Then give the shot a little time. Think through what you want out of the shot, observe the conditions, make a decision and fire. Most importantly love it.
