Behind The Lens

Location

Cosumnes River Preserve in Galt Ca. In the wildlife area.

Time

Was taken at 5:34 pm in winter and the sun was setting.

Lighting

It was winter the sun was setting birds were getting out of there quick. Didn't have time to mount a flash.

Equipment

Nikon D2x using a 1967-1974 Nikkor-N Auto 1:2.8 24mm manual lens, no flash, f3.2, 1/640 sec., ISO 100 on a tripod. Aperture Priority

Inspiration

Came to this wildlife preserve to see all the birds coming in at sunset. I was waiting for the Sandhill Cranes when I seen this flock of birds leaving this tree. Was able to take only a few shots and this is the only one that came out. This picture was my first black and white photo and also the first picture I took that I had printed professionally. I love this photo and it is the only one I have ever hung on my wall.

Editing

Lightroom 4 very little processing.

In my camera bag

I use both Nikon and Canon gear, D2x camera and the 5d Mark II. I have a Tamron 24-70 and the 100-400 L lens with me for canon. I bring the Nikkor 24mm manual lens and the 70-300 AF VR lens for Nikon while birding. I carry a Quantum flash for both and the OEM Canon and Nikon flashes.

Feedback

I wasn't expecting this shot but had a camera and lens ready on a tripod just in case as a back up to my main hand held camera and lens. I had to start shooting quick for this capture using manual lens with no flash. Next time I will have a AF with Vibration Reduction or Image Stabilization with a flash ready.
