Brings to life the heat, smoke, and sound of so much steel pushing itself though to the 'other side'. :)

Location
This shot was taken at a road crossing in Canmore, Alberta and is one of my favourite train shots.I got in under the guard rail that comes down to stop the traffic and stood about 8 feet from the track as the train barreled down at 40 kilometres per hour; ignoring the yelling CP Rail Inspectors (/police) who insisted that I get back on the correct side of the protective barriersTime
Taken at just before noonLighting
Normally I avoid mid-day shots; trying to use angled light rather than direct overhead lighting to accent and highlight features in my subject.... but in this case.... I wanted to maximize the overhead lighting and create a feeling of size and powerEquipment
I almost never go out without my Nikon P500 around my neck and a Canon 1400 in my pocket.... in this case it was the P500; the mid-day lighting allowed for a very well lit hand-held quick shot (series of shots) to be takenInspiration
Trains, to me. are a romantic subject... there's the feeling of a link to the past, the dream-quality of getting away, the nostalgic raw sort of power.... and I always try to make them... larger than life... I think, when I saw this coming down the track... I knew I would get the feeling I wanted to convey to the viewer.Editing
My post-processing on 95% of my images is limited to cropping, some adjustment in contrast, some minor play in levels. Beyond that is, to me at least, a cheat... This particular shot took me about 3 minutes to be happy with the cropping and that's pretty much all I did.In my camera bag
I almost always carry my Nikon P500. Any other equipment I might have is reserved for paid gigs.... this one was just a fun shotFeedback
Advice... wow... umm... don't listen to the people who tell you the shot won't work... you know better than anyone what you're trying to get as the final image and only you know what will and won't work... ... Take some chances..... make sure that people know you're a photographer and not some crazy person.... and.... most importantly plan to shoot the same scene more than once... If you look through my gallery you will see lots of train shots... this one i think is the best of them BUT I've shot and re-shot the train coming through town probably 100 times in 100 different lighting and weather scenarios. Good shots (if you like this one that is) are made; and are usually the result of lots of practice shooting less than great images.
