Behind The Lens

Location

Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Cheney, Washington.

Time

Mid afternoon

Lighting

Mostly sunny, sun was high in the sky and shadows were short, the clouds were beautiful, big and fluffy white (as you can see...lol)

Equipment

Nikon D5000. Nikkor 18-55mm lens, 1/200 sec, f16. Always use a tripod and in this shot I used a Hoya circular polarizing filter.

Inspiration

I was walking by and the reflection was unlike any i had seen before, the water was like a mirror.

Editing

Adobe Lightroom 5. My standard workflow includes leveling, reducing chromatic aberrations, increasing shadows and decreasing highlights, adjusting both black and white clipping just to the point were details are retained. In this photo i increased the saturation a bit and the clarity, adjusted the sharpness a tad.

In my camera bag

Always carry the 18-55. I also have a 55-200 mm Nikkor lens. Never leave home without my tripod, the Hoya circular polarizing filter is used a lot with my landscape photos. I also have a Neutral Density filter for bright days when i want a slow shutter speed for water falls.

Feedback

Polarizing filter is a must for shots like this. It takes the glare off the water to allow for beautiful reflections and gives the photographer a lot of control with the blues in the sky that can't be done in post processing. If you do a lot of landscapes and don't have one.....GET ONE! Tripods are also important if you want a really sharp image!
