Behind The Lens

Location

I don't really remember the exact spot this photo was taken for the simple reason that when I discovered the blossoms, I got so excited that I began to move the tree around, in pretty much every corner of my house. It is definitely an indoors picture, with a high chance of it having been taken in my living room.

Time

I kept this tree in the basement for the whole winter, so one day I went down to look for something else and discovered the beautiful blossoms. It must have been around mid-day because I remember the light was pretty awesome when I got downstairs.

Lighting

You are looking at an example of beautiful natural light. I actually only take natural light pictures and don't know if I have ever used an external light. Maybe once, on someone else's camera.

Equipment

The camera I usually use is a Canon T4i. I have only had Canon cameras, so I am pretty loyal to the brand. All my lenses are Canon as well. I hand held the camera, I am pretty sure. No other fancy equipment was used.

Inspiration

You are looking at a small cherry tree that spent an entire winter abandoned in the basement. I actually threw it downstairs and almost forgot about it and even when I remembered it existed I mostly thought about going down to pick it up and throw it away, I was almost 100% positive it did not survive the winter. Needless to say it was not watered all this time, not even once. It was basically sent to die, but it held on pretty heroically. I live in a decent size home, so I rarely go into the basement. One day I went downstairs to look for something else and was shocked to see that the tree I had sent down to die was actually thriving and had the most beautiful blooms. It was so beautiful and I was so excited that I immediately forgot why I had even gone downstairs, picked it up and spent a few hours I think photographing it in every corner of my house, in every possible light, with every possible backdrop. It looked equally beautiful from every angle.

Editing

I am self taught when it comes to photography. I was interested in discovering what a camera can do and how to best make use of one, but I never had the will power to sit through an entire Photoshop class. I only know basic stuff when it comes to post processing and if the photo was ever retouched, it must have been only minor adjustments. I might be wrong if I say this is straight out of camera, but it must be very, very close to it.

In my camera bag

I usually carry around my Canon T4i because I like the touch screen. I own another Canon, but I rarely use it. I started with two kit lenses, which I rarely get out of the bag these days. Most of the time I walk around with a 50mm primer because it is light or a macro lens just in case I come across some beautiful flowers. I like photographing details, so this is one lens I simply had to have. I also have a few filters, some of which are magnifying - never used them but they are in my bag, just in case. Extra batteries and a remote come in handy, so they have their place in the bag too.

Feedback

Chase the light! Subjects do not have to be fancy, anything can become beautiful through a lens. I wish I knew more about color combinations and use this in my photography, but anything that looks good enough to get your attention, will look good enough in a photo. Also don't be afraid to take objects out of their normal environment. We've seen so many blooming trees being captured in their environment, outside, in a garden or on the street, it is the norm. Take them out of that environment and place them against a vibrant backdrop and voila, you have a photo that will draw people's attention because it is a bit unexpected in a way.
