Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the valley of Loen in the municipality of Stryn, in Norway, summer of 2013.

Time

Every summer since 2009 I'm staying on the west coast of Norway, driving cruise-boat tourists by bus around the fjords and mountains. This is a valley I sometimes visit with the tourists, and it is my absolute favorite place, and valley, of the whole region, so calm, so lush but still wild with all the noise from the many waterfalls, which are huge! The photo is taken at noon in end of May.

Lighting

It is all natural light, harsh mid-day sunlight. But she (the sun) is forgiven, giving me rays like that :)

Equipment

I shot this photo with my Canon 60D, a Canon EF-S 10-22mm 3,5-5,6 USM lens with a pol-filter, hand-held.

Inspiration

As I drove the bus full of tourists into the valley that morning, the rain was absolutely pouring down on us, but I had the camera with me, knowing that the weather in this region shifts super-quick. Half an hour before the photo was shot, the sky was pitch black as far as my eyes could see, not a sky I was out to fill my photos with... But going back to port with my tourists I saw the sky open up and the sun lighting up the wet mountains, which gave them this amazing glow. I stopped at this old abandoned summer-farm with grass-roof just as the vikings made them, took my camera and ran up the hill to catch the peaceful moment before 40+ tourists came stomping around, ruining the moment. I got 3 photos before the place was overrun. I won a Norwegian photo-contest that autumn with this picture, first place gave my photo a spot in a commercial shown on three super-boards in Times Square, New York, in may of 2014. This picture was shown in the commercial every 2nd minute, every hour for a whole week.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to post-process the image. I lightened the shadows, brought down the Highlights, gave it a bit of Carity, increased the Vibrance to give it a bit more of a "pop" and gave it a bit of Sharpening.

In my camera bag

As of now my bag is to small for my gear, but I almost all the time take all my gear with me which includes: a Canon 60D with a battery-grip, a Canon 6D, a Canon EF-S 10-22mm 3,5-5,6 USM lens, a Canon EF 50mm 1,4 USM lens, a Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2,8 IS USM lens, a Canon EF 100mm 2,8 Macro USM lens, Lee Filters Little Stopper, Lee Filters 0,6 hard grad ND-filter (100mm System), two Canon 430 EX II Flashes, UV-filters, a pol-filter and a sturdy tripod.

Feedback

Travel to Norway in the month of may or early June or in the end of August to catch the most amazing of locations and beautiful natural light. The colors are sometimes mind-blowing around Europe's biggest mainland glacier "Jostedal Glacier", just upstream from the lake in this photo is another lake, a true glacier-lake, that is deep turquoise from the month of June, a must see! Besides that, keep your eyes looking straight into the horizon and above, instead of looking at your phone or the pavement of a city, unless you are looking for a subject for macro-photography that is. Get yourself out of the sofa and go outside, leave the busy part of your neighborhood and go out into the wild...
